TRANSITIVITY OF SYNECDOCHIC AND METAPHORIC ENGLISH PROVERBS IN LEARN ENGLISH TODAY.COM A SYSTEMIC FUNCTIONAL LINGUISTIC

In connection to what has been discussed above, the writer is interested in seeing and analysing proverbs. Proverbs are known functioning as a very effective device to communicate wisdom and knowledge about human nature and the world at large (Meider, 2004 cited in Nafibar, 2013). The basic data collected are English proverbs in Learn English Today.com that contain synecdoche and metaphor as their figurative language. Norrick’s theory is utilized to classify the data into synecdoche and metaphor. He also classified each of them into another two types: part-whole and scenic synecdoches; object-attribute and predicate extension metaphors where those becomes this research’s goal to find. Regarding two research problems proposed by this research: a) From all the analysis in the previous chapter, it is found that there are two types of synecdoche and two types of metaphor forming the English proverbs in Learn English Today.com
